Winter is a tough time of year for your vehicle. The excess damp can cause rusting of its exposed parts, while freezing action overnight can seize the engine and cause the doors and trunk to stick. Not only that, the windshield gets a tough time with a constant barrage of rain, snow, and ice.
There’s no doubt that it’s better to keep your car in a garage, if you can, during the winter, but if this isn’t possible, then you’ll need some ideas on how to avoid needing repairs, including for one of the most important parts of your vehicle: the windshield. Read on for ways to avoid auto glass replacement this winter.
Many drivers aren’t aware that your windshield needs an inspection from time to time. Much like taking aregular trip to the dentist, your mechanic or windscreen expert will be able to diagnose cracks or issues that might cause you trouble over the coming months, and fix them before the issue gets worse, requiring a full auto glass replacement.
This is the time of year your wipers will get the most use – so make sure they aren’t going to do damage to your windshield. If you haven’t replaced them in a while, or you think they might be getting ineffective, get new ones before they have a chance to deteriorate even further.
Exposing ice to hot liquid is the fastest way to melt it, but under no circumstances should you pour hot water on your windshield, unless you want to see it shatter before your very eyes. Auto glass is strong and sturdy, but huge fluctuations in temperate that occur quickly will cause cracking, so avoid windscreen replacement by using room temperature water – it will still be effective – or better yet, as mentioned below, a product designed for de-icing your car.
A de-icer is another liquid that is very helpful when removing icewith care from your windshield. While scraping a layer of ice off the glass is labour-intensive and may cause scratches, these specially formulated liquids will melt ice, frost, and snow on contact, allowing you to start your journey as soon as possible, and sidestep a possible auto glass replacement in the meantime.
